Allchin Brothers

Allchin Brothers Company History

Laverne Allchin who also operated a brokerage business representing various sugar and food processors founded Allchin Paper in 1946. Laverne sold bulk sugar to food and beverage manufacturers in Upstate New York and brand name canned vegetables to supermarket chains. Laverne purchased a list of accounts from a small paper distributor in 1946 and named it Allchin Paper.

One of Laverne’s major reasons for founding the new company was to provide his son, Justin, the opportunity to work alongside himself. It was Laverne who had guided Justin to enlist in the navy during World War II. At that time, Justin was a 17-year-old junior at Brighton High School in Rochester, New York. Justin returned after the war and finished his final year at Brighton before joining Allchin Paper.

Initially, Allchin Paper distributed paper grades used for wrapping and cushioning to garment and shoe manufacturers and retail stores. Sibley’s, McCurdy’s, B. Forman, and Bonds were some of his frequent customers. Justin also distributed cushioning materials, adhesive tapes and twine to OEM’s such as Corning Glass, Eastman Kodak, and Taylor Sybron. Justin sold Corning Glass all their box partitions for the Christmas tree lights they manufactured and also began importing sisal twine and rope from Brazil and other parts of the world.

Unfortunately, in 1957, Laverne passed away at the early age of 56 and Justin continued running the business out of the warehouse on Exchange Street in Rochester. In 1967, Urban Renewal demolished all the warehouses along the Genesee River on Exchange Street and Justin moved the business to Victor, New York. Justin and his wife Marilyn, along with their four sons, moved from Henrietta to Victor around the same time.

Currently, three sons (Jeff, John and Mark) operate the business while Justin remains in an advisory role. In 1997 the company changed its name to Allchin Brothers. 2006 marked the 60th anniversary of this third generation family business.

Today Allchin Brothers distributes packaging materials and equipment along with maintenance supplies.
